She is one of the favorites of the public: the hyper-realistic sculpture of a mother with a baby and groceries by Ron Mueck (1958). More real than real, and at the same time alienating. Her size confuses you.
Ron Mueck plays with scale. His sculptures seem lifelike, only the size doesn’t match. He makes his figures ridiculously large or just slightly smaller than normal. Our Woman with shopping seems particularly vulnerable due to her small size.
Ron Mueck gets the idea for this sculpture while he’s in the car. He and his wife are at a traffic light. A pedestrian passes by. A mother with a baby on her belly. She’s waiting to cross the street. The image strikes Ron. His wife is behind the wheel. He quickly looks for something to sketch on. An old parking ticket serves as drawing paper. The traffic light turns green. The beginning of a new artwork is born.
Ron Mueck’s artwork at the LAM museum is one to zoom in on. There are so many details to discover here! Have you seen the stubble on her legs, her eye makeup that’s slightly smudged? And those delicate veins that shine through on the baby’s temple and his soft downy hair. Make sure to peek into and through the plastic of the shopping bags without touching the artwork: from a bottle of Chardonnay to Sudocrem for the baby’s little cheeks.
Did you know that Ron Mueck only became an artist later in his life? He worked as a puppet maker and performer for 20 years before that.
The LAM museum’s art collection is inspired by food, drink and shopping. Each artwork shines a different light on these ordinary concepts and activities. A visit to the museum will transform your perspective on the things you encounter every day.
