The Dutch artist Magali Reus (1981) offers you a new perspective on something everyday with this XXXL Bonne Maman honey pot.
This artwork by Magali Reus resembles a reused honey pot from the French brand Bonne Maman, but much larger: the honey pot is almost half a meter tall.
With this artwork, Magali Reus plays with our desire for authentic products. The Bonne Maman jars appear to come straight from your French grandmother with their graceful handwritten labels and the red/white checkered lids.
The honey pot by Magali Reus has been given a new lease of life. Probably like everyone else who sometimes uses old pots for nails, rubber bands, or other small items. In the XL honey pot at the LAM museum, there’s still some pink paint. Over the original Bonne Maman label, there’s an owner’s tag. Reus calls it ‘domestic graffiti.’ The so-called delicious artisanal honey pot from France finally becomes truly authentic. A memento of a person in a time and place.
Magali Reus’s artwork is part of a larger series of Bonne Maman pots titled Clementine. The honey pot from the LAM museum bears the subtitle Bandit, a reference to the stripe of the honeybee and the broken glass of the pot.
The LAM museum’s art collection is inspired by food, drink and shopping. Each artwork shines a different light on these ordinary concepts and activities. A visit to the museum will transform your perspective on the things you encounter every day.
