The Dutch artist Folkert de Jong (1972) created a new version of the famous Venus by Sandro Botticelli (1445 – 1510) specifically for the LAM museum.
Dea Consumptia, Goddess of Consumption, as Folkert de Jong’s Venus is named, is a 265 cm tall sculpture made of everyday building materials such as epoxy, polyurethane foam, and Styrofoam. She has an irregular skin and rises from a plastic soup. ‘With this artwork, I want to criticize the consumption of female beauty,’ says Folkert de Jong
Around 1483, Sandro Botticelli painted The Birth of Venus. According to legend, Venus, the goddess of love, was born from sea foam and arrived on a shell on the shores of Cyprus. She remains the ultimate symbol of beauty for many people. The original painting in the Italian Uffizi museum attracts thousands of visitors every month. Photographers, fashion designers, and pop stars are often inspired by the appearance of the goddess.
Botticelli’s Venus attempts to cover her nudity with her hands and long flowing hair. According to the artist Folkert de Jong, it is a shameless depiction of the young woman as an object of desire. ‘Sandro Botticelli makes us as viewers complicit in a kind of forced striptease,’ says Folkert. ‘Just as advertising seduces us into buying luxury goods and other items, Botticelli’s painting urges us to consume outward beauty.’
Folkert de Jong is known for his typical use of materials. He works with everyday building materials such as expanding foam. Dea Consumptia, the sculpture at the LAM museum, is made of epoxy, polyurethane foam, and Styrofoam. These materials come from the chemical industry and are harmful to the environment. ‘I see these unethical materials as the marble of today.’ The materials are used for insulating household appliances, shipbuilding, and architecture. ‘Without realizing it, they are all around us.
The LAM museum’s art collection is inspired by food, drink and shopping. Each artwork shines a different light on these ordinary concepts and activities. A visit to the museum will transform your perspective on the things you encounter every day.
