It was a long-cherished wish of the LAM museum: to let you experience the ice art of the Brazilian artist João Loureiro (1972). Thanks to the lender Museum Pinacoteca de São Paulo, it finally happened in the summer of 2023: a freezing experience in six shades of grey. Not in São Paulo, but right here in Lisse.
How did that artwork look like? An ice cream cart with six flavors of ice cream in six shades of grey, from very light grey to almost black ice cream. Without name tags and served in an anthracite wafer cone. How festive does a summer ice cream feel without color? And how and what do you actually taste when the familiar color is gone? The alienating artwork, named Escala de Cinzas (Shades of Grey), was briefly experienced in the Netherlands. The Dutch TV show ‘Editie NL’ from RTL4 wanted to experience it themselves and stopped by.
For artist João Loureiro, it was also special. He traveled specifically to the Netherlands to see and taste his artwork at the LAM museum
For the LAM museum, the international loan has been a long-cherished wish that came true. Museum director Sietske van Zanten says, ‘I’ve known the artwork for years and always hoped to be able to present it someday. This artwork by João Loureiro fits us like a glove. João Loureiro makes you look at something mundane with new eyes. By removing something as simple as color, all your senses are shaken up for a while. Exactly what art can do. What do I see, and in this case, what do I also taste?
Unfortunately, João Loureiro’s ice experience is no longer available at the LAM museum. However, you can encounter this artwork by João Loureiro: Relógio, a clockwork made of slices of sausage. Did you know that inside an analog clock, there are all these gears that ensure the hands move precisely to the second, minute, and hour?
João Loureiro believes that people change food too much. Deli meats like these are hardly meat anymore. So much is added to them that they contain more flavorings, water, and fat. He believes it’s time to either stop eating meat or go back to the original product. So that we can start to appreciate nature more for what it is.
