Do you still remember? that first lockdown? It was a shock for star photographer Erwin Olaf. “The house of cards of our lives collapsed and what was left was an ominous silence. For weeks I felt scared and powerless, like a meaningless extra in a scary movie. Those supermarket shelves, looted by hoarders, made me realize that I thought everything would always be there.’ The video artwork and one of the two photos by Erwin Olaf in the LAM museum are about this period.
Erwin Olaf felt more vulnerable than ever. Physically – Erwin had emphysema – and professionally: ‘In April 2020 it was the first time that people did not answer the phone and did not answer my emails. I thought I was going bankrupt.’ By creating the April Fool series, the artist took matters into his own hands again. “I regained control and felt so much better.”
Many older works by Erwin Olaf initially look like perfect fashion photos. Until you look a little longer: “What I most want to show is a perfect world with a crack in it. I want to make the image seductive enough to draw people into my stories, and then deliver a blow.” Erwin Olaf was also a photographer for the Royal family. He was proud of that: “I am proud of it because the royal family connects people.”
In the 1980s, Erwin Olaf studied journalism in Utrecht. He was not happy. A teacher put a camera in his hands and changed his life. “I loved that thing from the start: the weight, the cool metal in my hand. It felt very natural. And when I took my first photos, I knew I had found my profession.”
This photo artwork by Erwin Olaf is called Im Wald, Im Nebel and is part of a series about nature. Erwin Olaf wanted to show the power of nature. He normally made his works in a studio. He had to go outside for this series. When Erwin Olaf was ready to take the photo, the fog suddenly rose. Where the photographer normally left nothing to chance, this time he embraced it.
The LAM museum’s art collection is inspired by food, drink and shopping. Each artwork shines a different light on these ordinary concepts and activities. A visit to the museum will transform your perspective on the things you encounter every day.
