British artist Ty Locke had a difficult childhood full of domestic violence. All his works of art refer to that sad and unsafe past. Yet his works of art are never sad. Ty Locke defuses the sadness and violence. In fact, Ty Locke makes you smile. “He likes to keep his works laughable, a little humor is needed,” says his gallery owner Will from Copperfield London.
Do you see those two blade tips bending towards each other? A joke from the artist. Ty Locke refers here to that world-famous mural by Michelangelo in which the fingers of God and Adam almost touch.
These knives have been rendered harmless. They can’t hurt you anymore. They’ve been cut into pieces and patched up with iron wire. Ty Locke has been working on it for weeks. The knives are heated until they soften, and then the knives have to be sharpened piece by piece, heated again, and holes drilled in them.
A Rack of Floppy Knives, is the title of this work of art.
The LAM museum’s art collection is inspired by food, drink and shopping. Each artwork shines a different light on these ordinary concepts and activities. A visit to the museum will transform your perspective on the things you encounter every day.
